Share codes

Share codes enable you to view and prove your immigration status online. In order to access your e-visa and request a share code, you must firstly create your UKVI online account.

Once you have done this, you will need to provide Æß²ÊÖ±²¥ with your share code as evidence of your Student visa.

  1. How do I access my UKVI account?

You will have a UKVI account if you:

    • Have EU settled or pre-settled status
    • Applied for your current visa using the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to scan your identity document on your phone

    You will need:

    • Details of the identity document you used when you applied (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence permit (BRP)
    • Your date of birth
    • Access to the mobile number or email address you used when you applied - you’ll be sent a code to log in

You will be able to view:

    • Your name
    • What immigration status you have (Student, EU Settled Status, Skilled Worker etc)
    • The expiry date of your status
    • What you are allowed to do in the UK, such as your Right to Study, work, and rent in the UK

Below is an example of what you will see when you successfully log into the system.

  2. Prove my Right to Study – share code

A share code is generated online for you to share with others, along with your date of birth, so that they can see your immigration status.

If you have an eVisa rather than a physical visa or BRP, then you will be required to provide a share code to the university as evidence of your Right to Study in the UK.

Firstly, you will need to log into the .

After you have logged in, you will need to click the green button on the page called 'Get a share code', as shown below.

Screenshot with the heading Prove your status; text reads: If you need to prove your immigration status to someone, you can do this online with a share code; followed by a green button marked Get a share code.

You will need your personal details including:

    • Details of the identity document you used when you applied (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card or permit)
    • Your date of birth
    • Access to the mobile number or email address you used when you applied - you’ll be sent a code to log in

    To request a share code to prove your Right to Study, you will need to select the third option which will state ‘something else’ as per the image below;

Screenshot with the heading What do you need the share code for? Three options are shown; the option labelled something else is selected. Green button below labelled Preview what the checker will see.

You will then select 'Preview what the checker will see'. After this, you will need to scroll to the bottom and click 'Create a share code'.

You will then see a share code. It is a random string of letters and numbers. You can see an example of a share code below:

Screenshot titled Details you need to share. Sub heading reads Share code. An example 14 digit code is shown.

Once you have generated a share code, you can either:

You must also provide your date of birth so that we can successfully view your online status.

The share code can usually be viewed for up to 90 days. It should also state the expiry date on it.

There is no limit on how many share codes you can request. You can request a new one before your share code expires if needed.

  3. Technical issue with accessing your e-visa

After creating your UKVI account, you should receive an automated email confirming that the UKVI have received your application to activate this and will send you an email to confirm once you have been granted access to your e-visa for you to view your immigration status and provide a share code for purposes such as proving your Right to Work, your Right to Rent, and your Right to Study.

If you have been unable to access your e-visa after several days and you have received no email from the UKVI about this, then you will need to contact the UKVI to request for assistance with this.

You will need to contact the UKVI using the link below
    .

Please let us know once you have been able to access your e-visa. You will need to provide the university with a share code as evidence of your Right to Study.

  4. What will Æß²ÊÖ±²¥ do with my share code?

The university will use your share code in order to check and verify your immigration status and your Right to Study. We will enter your share code into the following gov.uk website:
    .

Your immigration status will then be saved on your Student record as evidence. This is a UKVI requirement that the university has a copy of this saved.

  5. How do I report an error with my e-visa?

If you spot an error with your e-visa, please contact Æß²ÊÖ±²¥'s Visa Advice team to make the team aware of this.

You should report this error urgently as soon as you find this. However you must ensure you do not make any urgent travel plans until this error has been fixed as this could negatively impact you re-entering the UK at Border Control.

The error should be to the UKVI.

If you would prefer Æß²ÊÖ±²¥ to report this error, then please email Æß²ÊÖ±²¥'s Visa Advice team to confirm this and we can report this to the UKVI on your behalf and then advise further once they respond to us.

If you report this error yourself then please let us know once the error has been corrected by the UKVI. We will require you to provide us with a new share code as evidence that the error has been corrected.

  6. Travelling outside of the UK

If you are planning to travel and re-enter the UK, it is important to note that your immigration status will be checked digitally at Border Control – either via automated systems or using the online View and Prove service for your UKVI account. You will need to , you can also use the ‘update details’ function in the View and Prove service.

If any of your personal details have changed since you created your UKVI account, you must update these. Details can include a change in name, nationality, date of birth or sex marker), or a new or different passport which can be added to a UKVI account quickly and easily. The vast majority of changes are applied by the UKVI immediately.

The UKVI have confirmed that they have extended the ‘grace period’ announced in December 2024 which allows people with a biometric residence permit (BRP) or EUSS biometric residence card (BRC) that expired on or after 31 December 2024, and who continue to hold underlying immigration status, to continue to use their BRP for international travel until 1 June 2025 inclusive.

From the 2 June 2025, expired BRPs and EUSS BRCs will no longer be acceptable evidence of immigration status when travelling to the UK.

You may also choose to in advance in order to be able to provide this at Border Control upon arrival in the UK.
