REF Impact

What is Impact?

Over recent years the term ‘impact’ is being used more and more often, but what does this mean to you as researchers?

A broad definition of research impact is the change(s) and or/benefits as a result of a body of work. Impact is measured in terms of reach (number of people) and significance (intensity).

Definitions of impact for the REF2014 are available from: and examples of how these were applied to previous case studies can be found here.

If you are applying for a Research Councils UK grant, you should check out their definitions and pathways to impact guidance.

Liz Bonnett, Æß²ÊÖ±²¥’s REF Officer (Research Impact) is here to support you with all things relating to impact and can be contacted at: ref.impact@dmu.ac.uk.
